Bishni danced in thorough fares to earn a livelihood. Jhumroo accompanied her on a harmonium and Rirkoo played on the dholak. Bishni’s maternal uncle Mama was a well-known Rasdhari, who had given up this profession due to his old age. He had brought up Jhumroo. Jhumroo’s companionship with Bishni hadhad led him to fall in love with her. But Bishni had already fallen in love with Amar, a rich man’s son from another village. Amar too loved her. Both used to meet without the knowledge of their parents. When her Mama came to know about this he immediately thought of separating Bishni from Amar. He betrothed Bishni to Raunqi Ram, the village Munshi by taking one thousand rupees from him.
When Bishni came to know about her sale to an old man Raunqi by her Mama, she left the home in the dead of night. Amar’s father Lala Labhu Ram also became skeptical about Amar’s love for Bishni and asked his nephew Sunder to keep a watch on Amar. Sunder followed Amar whenever he went to meet Bishni and one day he secretly captured a photo of Bishni and Amar together. When Labhu Ram saw this photo, he put Amar under strict vigilance and betrothed him to a village maiden Rakkhi who too loved Amar. Meanwhile, Bishni reached the village in search of Amar, there she came to know that he had already been engaged to Rakkhi. A shocked and heart-broken Bishni left for the city. Her maternal uncle, Jhumroo and Rirkoo were looking for her. In order to escape from being caught by them, she got into a theatre. There, she gave such a brilliant performance that the audience was entralled. The theatre lord took her into service and on her recommendation her maternal uncle, Jhumroo and Rirkoo were also engaged. But here too Bishni’s beauty proved a curse for her. The theatre owner fell head over heels in love with her and decided to own her at all costs. Bishni mustered courage and made an escape. She went into hiding in a bunglow which by-chance belonged to Amar’s father, who had usurped this from his nephew Sunder.
At the night the watchman of the bunglow saw the shadow of Bishni in a window and thought it was a demon. He wrote to his master in the village about this and Amar came to inquire about the demon. And instead of a demon it turned out to be Bishni.
